Steve Jobs is Making Me Nervous

Ok, so Steve Jobs was absent at the conference call today. That’s a bit unusual. Even more unusual is that he wasn’t at the Palo Alto Apple Store on University when the iPhone 3G launched. I was a bit bummed, but figured he was playing Santa Clause around the world and didn’t have time to make a stop at his “home” store.

But, I didn’t see any sign of him. Heck, I got more media attention than he did on iPhone 3G day.

What gives. Steve, come out and play…or are the scary rumors true?

Here’s hoping you’re just prepping for major product launches Tuesday morning.

CES 2009 Dates Versus MacWorld 2009 Dates - The Overlap and the Future

Scheduling conflict with MacWorld 2009 and CES 2009

Yes, yet again, CES 2009 will partially overlap with MacWorld 2009.

MacWorld 2009 is from January 5-9 and CES 2009 is from January 8-11. This is interesting because while it does make it difficult for some vendors to exhibit at both, it does allow for press from around the world to do an open-jaw travel and catch both shows for the week.

It also would allow Steve Jobs to do a MacWorld 2009 keynote and CES 2009 keynote back-to-back. Although while we can’t get enough of the Steve Jobs keynotes, the prospect of a Steve Jobs CES 2009 keynote appears unfortunately unlikely at this time.

In case anyone is wondering, CEA dates of CES are published for the next 13 years:
Jan. 8-11, CES 2009 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 7-10, CES 2010 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 6-9, CES 2011 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 9-12, CES 2012 (Monday-Thursday)
Jan. 6-9, CES 2013 (Sunday-Wednesday)
Jan. 9-12, CES 2014 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 8-11, CES 2015 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 7-10, CES 2016 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 5-8, CES 2017 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 10-13, CES 2018 (Wednesday-Saturday)
Jan. 10-13, CES 2019 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 9-12, CES 2020 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 7-10, CES 2021 (Thursday-Sunday)
Jan. 6-9, CES 2022 (Thursday-Sunday)

Here’s hoping there won’t be CES and MacWorld scheduling conflicts in the future.

All CES dates are for the official locations:
Las Vegas Convention Center
Sands Expo and Convention Center/The Venetian
Las Vegas Hilton

The PodTech CES BlogHaus has always been at the very elegant Bellagio. Where would you like to see PodTech CES BlogHaus 2009?

Frank Caliendo’s “Andy Rooney Reviews the iPhone”

Very funny impersonation of Andy Rooney from 60 Minutes reviewing the iPhone:

Stay tuned for an update to the MacWorld 2008 and CES 2009 previews.

The MacWorld Pre-show (CES) and Steve Jobs’ Keynote Previews (MacWorld 2008 and CES 2009)

MacWorld has gotten to be so big that Apple has had to dedicate a weeklong convention in Las Vegas for vendors to show off all their iPod and iPhone accessories. They called this MacWorld 2008 Pre-show “CES 2008″, and kicked it off with Bill Gates delivering an “SNL like” Digital Short. It was the best 5 minutes of Bill Gates ever, followed by a dozen or so hours of random Microsoft messaging.

Fortunately, I was able to avoid watching the Bill Gates keynote in the convention hall by watching it stream live at the Seagate BlogHaus hosted by PodTech.net. At the BlogHaus, I met the lovely and delightful Chola from Ask A Chola, who was just one of the many Mac-using bloggers who showed up this year.

My promise for bloggers attending CES 2009 BlogHaus next year: I’ll tone down my Apple cult ideology, if in fact, Steve Jobs does deliver the CES 2009 Keynote.

As for the MacWorld 2008 Keynote, We’ll just have to wait to see if Steve Jobs can top the iPhone.

Steve Jobs to Deliver CES 2009 Keynote?

I’m at the CES BlogHaus 2008 watching Bill Gates deliver the CES 2008 Keynote.

There was a very funny skit Bill did to remind us that he was stepping down at Microsoft and that this would be his last CES Keynote. This of course raises the question of “Who will deliver the CES Keynote 2009”?

One name stands out of course, Steve Jobs.

Apple Inc. hasn’t been present at CES for the past few years, and has even stolen a lot of CES thunder in the past with doing things like announcing the iPhone at MacWorld 2007.

Steve Jobs delivering the CES 2009 Keynote, would definitely represent a shift in who people are looking at in terms of envisioning the future of consumer electronics. Of course many of us MacWorld regulars have been looking to Apple for this for some time now.

While there are a lot of compelling reasons for Steve Jobs to replace Bill Gates at CES 2009, this isn’t idle speculation. Check out the Steve Jobs keynote at MacWorld for some signs that Jobs is intending to head to Las Vegas this time next year.

How to: Quick and Easy Video for the iPhone, Apple TV and new iPods

Ripping DVDs, transferring video from cameras, or converting downloaded videos from various sources for Apple products can be a difficult and time consuming process. Now with a software update for the Turbo.264 hardware-based video encoder from Elgato Systems, Macintosh users now have a definitive best and fastest way to encode video for all of Apple’s latest products.

This small device simply plugs into any Intel or PowerPC based Mac with a USB port (USB 2 is highly recommended). All of the heavy processing normally done by your computer is offloaded onto the Turbo.264 encoder, resulting in much faster encoding and freeing up your Mac for other tasks.

The older and slower your Mac, the more significant the speed increase will be with this device. We found the Turbo.264 encoded video up to 20 times faster on a G4, but even on higher end Intel based Macs, encoding times were drastically improved with the Turbo.264.

The Elgato Turbo.264 goes for about $90 on Amazon.com, making it a very inexpensive way to bring new life to an old Mac as a video encoding workstation.

The new software for the Turbo.264 couldn’t be any easier to use. As with the earlier software, it allows for batch processing, but more importantly, it provides support for custom data rates and other settings. It also includes simple selections for encoding video optimized for the Apple TV, iPhone, iPods, or the recently announced iPod Touch, iPod Classic and iPod Nano (also known as the iPod Nano Fatty.

While the included software is easy to use, the Turbo.264 comes with plug-ins for QuickTime that allow it to work with any application that uses QuickTime for export. This includes Final Cut Express, Final Cut Pro, iMovie (including both HD and ‘08) and third party video apps such as Roxio Popcorn.

For an alternative to the Turbo.264 from Elgato, consider the VideoExpress from Miglia. The Miglia compares very well in terms of hardware and performance, but we find the software for the Turbo.264 to be much better due to the ability to easily customize the settings.

Apple iPhone iDay: It’s Here

At the final countdown, PodTech’s AppleVoices is at the Palo Alto Apple Store to witness the unveiling, or at least the door opening , on the iPhone and it’s public.

And yes, Steve Jobs was there!

Where is Steve on iDay?

Many iPhone iManiacs are hoping to catch a glimpse of Steve Jobs today. Well, at the Westfield Valley Fair mall the #1 person in line is none other than Steve Wozniak.

There are reports coming in that Steve Jobs will be showing up at the Valley Fair mall as well. But Jobs stalkers currently camping at the Palo Alto store may want to stay put as this may mean he’s planning on making multiple stops to promote the iPhone on iDay. And it’s worth remembering that the Palo Alto Apple store is:
1) Closest to where Jobs lives.
2) Where Jobs has made previous appearances for major product launches.
3) Right next to where Jobs got a contract to sell the first ever Apple product.

Then again, maybe Steve Jobs is catching a movie today.

Gametime for Apple, EA, and id Software

In my preview WWDC 2007 podcast with Rio Pesino, I mentioned that Steve Jobs may be making some significant announcements regarding gaming. In this PodTech podcast, Rio now reports on what was announced:

Apple is finally getting its game on. The company is partnering up with video game giant Electronic Arts and id Software to bring gaming to the Mac platform. The deals were announced during Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, CA. What does this mean for Apple and the gaming industry? PodTech’s Rio Pesino reports.

Before getting too excited about gaming on the Mac platform, it’s worth noting that these games come courtesy of Cider, a product created by TransGaming. MacNN.com has more info as does ExtremeTech who is a bit more negative (they question whether Steve Jobs lied).

The truth is that it has yet to be seen how well and how reliable games will run using Cider as opposed to be truly OS X native. One thing is for sure, game development on the Mac platform has become a lot easier as well as desirable.
