I’ve been running this all day, and while it’s still a little buggy (crashing from time to time), I’ve been able to do all kinds of cool stuff. Some of the things I’m playing with include using iSight image capture to see what’s going on at my house and using my iPhone as a remote control for iTunes. Both of these tasks work really well, as does using this for instant messaging on the iPhone.
The software gets loaded on your Mac, and the interface is just a web.app on your iPhone. You point Safari to your IP address on port 5010 and you’re good to go. The developers were really smart about this. Instead of having it be just a regular remote access app, they’ve optimized things into common tasks which don’t require time consuming screen refreshes. In other words, you have a web applet on the iPhone for iTunes remote control. You can go into (time/bandwidth consuming) screen mode and see/select your iTunes playlists, but you can also just go to the more efficient remote control web applet to play/pause/skip music. The remote control doesn’t require screen refreshing so the commands are executed very rapidly.
telekinesis provides several direct applets like the remote controller and allows you to create more and customize via AppleScript.
Again, this is early beta, but the potential for remote access on the iPhone is huge.
