Where is Steve on iDay?

Many iPhone iManiacs are hoping to catch a glimpse of Steve Jobs today. Well, at the Westfield Valley Fair mall the #1 person in line is none other than Steve Wozniak.

There are reports coming in that Steve Jobs will be showing up at the Valley Fair mall as well. But Jobs stalkers currently camping at the Palo Alto store may want to stay put as this may mean he’s planning on making multiple stops to promote the iPhone on iDay. And it’s worth remembering that the Palo Alto Apple store is:
1) Closest to where Jobs lives.
2) Where Jobs has made previous appearances for major product launches.
3) Right next to where Jobs got a contract to sell the first ever Apple product.

Then again, maybe Steve Jobs is catching a movie today.

Ooops, I broke my iPhone…Now what?

Those “crazy” iPhone campers lucky enough to score a free iGot iPhone shirt should pay close attention to where the shirt came from. FastMac is planning on getting up to speed as soon as possible to offer iPhone repairs. Those who know FastMac know they were early on getting iPod battery replacements and have been a long time Apple supporter. You’ll want to keep an eye on their site for details and a iPhone disassembly video showing the internal workings of the iPhone and what can be done (repairs, component replacement, or maybe even upgrades).

And for those who didn’t get a shirt on iDay, FastMac is still offering the shirt for free on their site.

Apple iPhone Mania: Counting Down from Day 2…

Don’t want to wait in line for an Apple iPhone? One option is to pay someone to wait in those massive lines for you. In day two of our countdown of the iPhone’s release, PodTech’s Rio Pesino spoke with one person advertising on CraigsList to give up his spot in line at the Palo Alto Apple Store for a nominal fee.

Apple Plans On Instantly Activating All Those iPhones

TheStreet.com is reporting that Apple should (if they can pull it off) move 400,000 iPhones on opening day, also known as iDay.

That’s 100,000 per hour.

Phone sales (including the activation process) are notorious for taking forever to process with some providers promising it can be done in two hours.

So, how do nearly 2,000 stores each sell roughly 50 per hour?

Not by using the same means that we’ve all gone through when buying our phones. This is the iPhone. What we’re eagerly awaiting is supposed to be easier, better, and different.

Rumors and speculation have pointed to a few scenarios including:
- Pre-activated iPhones.
- Buy now, activate later at an AT&T/Cingular store.
- Massive teams of employees standing by to activate the iPhones.

Of course having simplified the options will definitely speed up the processing of sales. There’s only one color, one model, two storage capacities, and likely to be very few options when it comes to service plans.

We’ve heard from a source that Apple intends to allow buyers to activate the iPhone via iTunes, which will also include the billing, configuration of service options as well as future upgrades.

I took a trip to a nearby Apple store and spoke to representatives about how early I should expect to start camping out. They’re feeling pretty confident that all who show up on Friday before 10pm will go home with an iPhone. On the other hand, they were pretty excited about the idea that people would want to camp out all day for an iPhone.

UPDATE 06/26/2007 9am: Apple has not only confirmed that you can activate at home, but has posted this how-to video on their site

Gametime for Apple, EA, and id Software

In my preview WWDC 2007 podcast with Rio Pesino, I mentioned that Steve Jobs may be making some significant announcements regarding gaming. In this PodTech podcast, Rio now reports on what was announced:

Apple is finally getting its game on. The company is partnering up with video game giant Electronic Arts and id Software to bring gaming to the Mac platform. The deals were announced during Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, CA. What does this mean for Apple and the gaming industry? PodTech’s Rio Pesino reports.

Before getting too excited about gaming on the Mac platform, it’s worth noting that these games come courtesy of Cider, a product created by TransGaming. MacNN.com has more info as does ExtremeTech who is a bit more negative (they question whether Steve Jobs lied).

The truth is that it has yet to be seen how well and how reliable games will run using Cider as opposed to be truly OS X native. One thing is for sure, game development on the Mac platform has become a lot easier as well as desirable.

In part 1 of the Apple WWDC 2007 Steve Jobs Keynote, Electronic Arts and ID Software showed new games and a commitment to the Macintosh OS X platform.

Note: Due to technical issues, this podcast is not up to Apple Voices quality standards. Additional coverage from WWDC 2007 will follow with video.
