The MacWorld Pre-show (CES) and Steve Jobs’ Keynote Previews (MacWorld 2008 and CES 2009)

MacWorld has gotten to be so big that Apple has had to dedicate a weeklong convention in Las Vegas for vendors to show off all their iPod and iPhone accessories. They called this MacWorld 2008 Pre-show “CES 2008″, and kicked it off with Bill Gates delivering an “SNL like” Digital Short. It was the best 5 minutes of Bill Gates ever, followed by a dozen or so hours of random Microsoft messaging.

Fortunately, I was able to avoid watching the Bill Gates keynote in the convention hall by watching it stream live at the Seagate BlogHaus hosted by PodTech.net. At the BlogHaus, I met the lovely and delightful Chola from Ask A Chola, who was just one of the many Mac-using bloggers who showed up this year.

My promise for bloggers attending CES 2009 BlogHaus next year: I’ll tone down my Apple cult ideology, if in fact, Steve Jobs does deliver the CES 2009 Keynote.

As for the MacWorld 2008 Keynote, We’ll just have to wait to see if Steve Jobs can top the iPhone.

Steve Jobs to Deliver CES 2009 Keynote?

I’m at the CES BlogHaus 2008 watching Bill Gates deliver the CES 2008 Keynote.

There was a very funny skit Bill did to remind us that he was stepping down at Microsoft and that this would be his last CES Keynote. This of course raises the question of “Who will deliver the CES Keynote 2009”?

One name stands out of course, Steve Jobs.

Apple Inc. hasn’t been present at CES for the past few years, and has even stolen a lot of CES thunder in the past with doing things like announcing the iPhone at MacWorld 2007.

Steve Jobs delivering the CES 2009 Keynote, would definitely represent a shift in who people are looking at in terms of envisioning the future of consumer electronics. Of course many of us MacWorld regulars have been looking to Apple for this for some time now.

While there are a lot of compelling reasons for Steve Jobs to replace Bill Gates at CES 2009, this isn’t idle speculation. Check out the Steve Jobs keynote at MacWorld for some signs that Jobs is intending to head to Las Vegas this time next year.

New 45nm Penryn ships = New Macs on Tuesday?

With the new Hafnium-based Penryn shipping, the rumors and speculation has already started regarding new Intel 45nm Penryn based Macintosh computers from Apple. I’m guessing a Tuesday announcement as opposed to Monday since that’s Apple’s usual method, but who knows?

While the Apple Store was down over the weekend, it came back up with no new products. But now with this announcement from Intel, I’d keep a close eye on the store for new products being released that take Macs into the second generation of Intel Core microarchitecture.

Apple Plans On Instantly Activating All Those iPhones

TheStreet.com is reporting that Apple should (if they can pull it off) move 400,000 iPhones on opening day, also known as iDay.

That’s 100,000 per hour.

Phone sales (including the activation process) are notorious for taking forever to process with some providers promising it can be done in two hours.

So, how do nearly 2,000 stores each sell roughly 50 per hour?

Not by using the same means that we’ve all gone through when buying our phones. This is the iPhone. What we’re eagerly awaiting is supposed to be easier, better, and different.

Rumors and speculation have pointed to a few scenarios including:
- Pre-activated iPhones.
- Buy now, activate later at an AT&T/Cingular store.
- Massive teams of employees standing by to activate the iPhones.

Of course having simplified the options will definitely speed up the processing of sales. There’s only one color, one model, two storage capacities, and likely to be very few options when it comes to service plans.

We’ve heard from a source that Apple intends to allow buyers to activate the iPhone via iTunes, which will also include the billing, configuration of service options as well as future upgrades.

I took a trip to a nearby Apple store and spoke to representatives about how early I should expect to start camping out. They’re feeling pretty confident that all who show up on Friday before 10pm will go home with an iPhone. On the other hand, they were pretty excited about the idea that people would want to camp out all day for an iPhone.

UPDATE 06/26/2007 9am: Apple has not only confirmed that you can activate at home, but has posted this how-to video on their site
